Best Coffee for Espresso

Best Coffee for Espresso

Espresso requires a coffee that can produce a concentrated, bold shot with thick crema and rich flavor. The best espresso coffee is a dark roast with low acidity, heavy body, and bittersweet chocolate or caramel notes that hold up under high-pressure extraction.

At Milestone Brewed Coffee, we recommend Italian Roast as the best overall espresso coffee. Its dark, bold character and naturally low acidity produce rich, syrupy shots with thick crema. Every order is roasted the day it ships.

Recommended Coffees for Espresso

1. Italian Roast — Best Overall for Espresso

Roast: Dark | Notes: Bold, bittersweet, low acid, syrupy body

Our darkest roast besides French Roast, specifically crafted for intensity. Produces thick, golden crema and a shot that cuts through milk beautifully. The low acidity means no sourness even at espresso concentration.

2. Cowboy Blend — Versatile & Bold

Roast: Medium-dark | Notes: Dark chocolate, caramel, full body

Works equally well as espresso or drip. The medium-dark roast produces a sweeter shot than Italian Roast, with chocolate notes that pair perfectly with milk for lattes and cappuccinos.

3. Max Caf Blend — High Caffeine Espresso

Roast: Dark | Notes: Bold, extra caffeine, low acid

Our highest-caffeine blend. If you want a serious espresso that doubles as a pre-workout shot, this is it. Dark, bold, and roughly 50% more caffeine than standard coffee.

4. French Roast — Darkest & Smokiest

Roast: Dark | Notes: Smoky, bittersweet, intense

Our darkest roast. Produces the most intense, smoky espresso shot in our lineup. Best for those who like their espresso straight or in a macchiato.

How to Choose Coffee for Espresso

Roast Level

Dark roasts are the traditional choice for espresso. The dark roast produces oils that create crema, and the low acidity prevents sourness at high concentration. Medium-dark roasts (like Cowboy Blend) work well for milk-based drinks.

Grind Size

Fine grind is essential. Espresso requires a fine, consistent grind — similar to table salt or slightly finer. All Milestone coffees are available pre-ground; select "Fine" or "Espresso" as your grind option.

Flavor Profile

Look for coffees with bittersweet chocolate, caramel, nutty, or smoky notes. These flavors concentrate beautifully in espresso. Avoid light, fruity, or floral coffees — they tend to taste thin or sour as espresso.

Blend vs. Single Origin

Blends are generally preferred for espresso because they offer balanced, consistent flavor. Single origins can work but tend to be more acidic and less forgiving. Our Italian Roast and Cowboy Blend are both excellent espresso blends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any coffee for espresso?

Technically yes, but dark roasts produce the best results. Light roasts tend to taste sour and thin as espresso. We recommend Italian Roast, Cowboy Blend, or Max Caf Blend for the richest, most balanced shots.

What grind should I use for espresso?

Fine grind — similar to table salt. Too coarse and the water passes through too quickly (under-extracted, sour). Too fine and the water can't pass through (over-extracted, bitter). All Milestone coffees can be pre-ground for espresso.

How much caffeine is in an espresso shot?

A single shot (1 oz) of espresso contains about 63mg of caffeine. Our Max Caf Blend has roughly 50% more — about 95mg per shot. A double shot of Max Caf gives you nearly 190mg, comparable to a strong cup of drip coffee.

Can I make espresso without a machine?

You can make concentrated coffee with a Moka pot or Aeropress, but true espresso requires 9 bars of pressure. For the closest result without an espresso machine, use a Moka pot with a fine grind and dark roast.
