Best Coffee for Cold Brew
Best Coffee for Cold Brew
Cold brew is the smoothest, lowest-acid way to make coffee — and it's also the easiest. The best coffee for cold brew is a bold, low-acid roast with natural sweetness and chocolate or nutty notes that shine through the long, cold steeping process.
At Milestone Brewed Coffee, we recommend our Cold Brew Blend as the best coffee for cold brew. It's specifically formulated for cold brewing with a bold, smooth character and naturally low acidity. Every order is roasted the day it ships.
Recommended Coffees for Cold Brew
1. Cold Brew Blend — Best Overall
Roast: Dark | Notes: Bold, smooth, low acid, naturally sweet
Specifically crafted for cold brewing. The dark roast produces a smooth, low-acid concentrate that's naturally sweet. Dilute 1:1 with water or milk, or serve over ice.
2. Sumatra Single Origin — Earthy & Heavy
Roast: Medium-dark | Notes: Earthy, dark chocolate, cedar, very low acid
Sumatra's natural low acidity and heavy body make it an excellent cold brew. The earthy, chocolate notes deepen during the cold steeping process.
3. French Roast — Darkest & Smokiest
Roast: Dark | Notes: Smoky, bittersweet, intense
Produces a bold, intense cold brew concentrate. Best for those who like their cold brew strong with a splash of milk or cream.
4. Cowboy Blend — Crowd-Pleaser
Roast: Medium-dark | Notes: Dark chocolate, caramel, full body
A versatile choice that works as both hot coffee and cold brew. The chocolate and caramel notes produce a sweet, approachable cold brew that's great for beginners.
5. Brazil Santos Single Origin — Sweet & Nutty
Roast: Medium | Notes: Chocolate, nuts, low acid, smooth
Brazilian coffee is naturally low in acid and high in sweetness — perfect for cold brew. The nutty, chocolate notes create a smooth, dessert-like cold brew.
How to Choose Coffee for Cold Brew
Roast Level
Dark roasts are ideal for cold brew. The dark roasting process reduces acidity and brings out bittersweet, chocolate notes that taste smooth and sweet when cold-brewed. Medium-dark roasts also work well.
Grind Size
Extra-coarse grind is best. Cold brew steeps for 18-24 hours, so a coarse grind prevents over-extraction and bitterness. Use a grind similar to raw sugar or coarse sand. All Milestone coffees can be pre-ground — select "Extra Coarse" for cold brew.
Flavor Profile
Look for coffees with chocolate, caramel, nutty, or earthy notes. These flavors become naturally sweet and smooth during cold brewing. Avoid bright, fruity, or floral coffees — they can taste flat or one-dimensional as cold brew.
Origin
Brazilian and Indonesian origins are the best choices for cold brew. Brazil offers natural sweetness and nutty flavors. Sumatra provides heavy body and very low acidity. Both produce smooth, low-acid cold brew concentrates.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is cold brew lower in acid than hot coffee?
Yes. Cold brewing extracts up to 65% less acid than hot brewing methods. If you have acid sensitivity, cold brew is the gentlest option. Our Cold Brew Blend and Sumatra Single Origin are naturally low-acid choices.
How long does cold brew concentrate last?
Cold brew concentrate stays fresh in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. For best flavor, consume within 7 days. Dilute with water or milk just before serving — don't pre-dilute the whole batch.
Can I use regular coffee for cold brew?
Yes, any coffee can be cold-brewed, but dark roasts with chocolate or nutty notes produce the best results. Our Cold Brew Blend is specifically formulated for cold brewing. Avoid light, fruity roasts — they can taste flat or sour as cold brew.
Do I need special equipment to make cold brew?
No. You can make cold brew with a large jar, coarse-ground coffee, and a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. For easiest cleanup, use a French press or a dedicated cold brew maker. See our Brewing Guide for step-by-step instructions.
