For the person who wants their coffee dark, smoky, and completely unapologetic about it. This is the cup for anyone who thinks lighter roasts are just coffee that didn't finish the job — bold, intense, and exactly what a dark roast should be.

French Roast is the darkest roast we carry — and for the people who love it, nothing else comes close. Bold, smoky, and intense in a way that lighter roasts simply can't replicate. This is the cup that announces itself. No subtlety. No apology. Just pure, unapologetic dark roast done right.

Why We Made This

Most French Roasts start with commodity-grade beans — the reasoning being that at this roast level, quality doesn't matter. We disagree. We start with specialty-grade Arabica beans, which means our French Roast is bold and smoky without the harshness that gives dark roast a bad reputation. Better beans. Better dark roast. That's the difference.

Flavor Profile

  • Smoky depth — the defining characteristic, bold and unmistakable
  • Dark chocolate bitterness — rich and satisfying, not harsh
  • Toasted caramel — a subtle sweetness that prevents the cup from being one-dimensional
  • Very low acidity — the roasting process breaks down acids, making this one of the most stomach-friendly options we carry
  • Full, heavy body — substantial and filling
  • Long, smoky finish — the roast character lingers

What Is French Roast?

A roast level, not an origin. Beans are taken past the second crack — the point where oils migrate to the surface and roast character becomes fully dominant. Origin character is largely replaced by the roasting process itself: caramelized sugars, smoky depth, dark chocolate intensity. Bold, direct, and unmistakable.

Ingredients

Specialty-grade Arabica coffee blend. French roast (darkest roast level). Roasted to order. Roasted fresh in Temecula, California — in most cases the same day it ships.

Yield: ~17–24 cups per 12oz bag. Larger sizes scale proportionally.

How to Brew

Drip (Recommended) — Simple, reliable, and consistent. Boldness comes through clearly in any drip machine. 1:15 ratio, medium grind.

French Press — Full body and oils come through without a paper filter — the richest, most complete expression of the roast. Coarse grind, 1:15 ratio, steep 4 minutes, press slowly.

Espresso — Bold, intense shot with smoky dark chocolate character. Works straight for maximum intensity or as the base for milk drinks that need a coffee that can hold its own against dairy.

Cold Brew — Low acidity and bold character make this excellent cold-brewed. Smoky depth softens slightly over ice into something smooth and powerful. 1:8 ratio, steep 18–24 hours.

Best For

  • Dark roast devotees who want the most intense cup available
  • Sensitive stomachs — one of the lowest-acid coffees we carry
  • Espresso and milk drinks — bold enough to hold its own against dairy
  • Early, demanding mornings — the boldness and intensity wake you up without subtlety

Frequently Asked Questions

Is French Roast bitter?
A well-roasted French Roast has a pleasant dark chocolate bitterness — not the harsh, unpleasant bitterness of a poorly roasted or stale dark roast. Starting with specialty-grade Arabica means ours is bold without being harsh.

Does French Roast have more caffeine?
No — this is the most common dark roast myth. The roasting process actually burns off a small amount of caffeine, so light roast technically has slightly more per bean. French Roast is bold in flavor, not necessarily in caffeine.

Is it good for acid reflux?
Yes — one of the lowest-acid coffees available. The roasting process breaks down chlorogenic acids, making dark roast significantly less acidic than light roast. Many people with acid sensitivity find French Roast much easier to tolerate.

How does it compare to Cowboy Blend?
Both are bold and low-acid, but French Roast is darker and smokier. Cowboy Blend has more chocolate and caramel sweetness with less smoke. Maximum intensity and smokiness — French Roast. Bold but slightly more nuanced — Cowboy Blend.
