Best Coffee Beans for French Press in 2025

If you've ever made French press coffee and wondered why it tasted flat, bitter, or just off β€” the answer is almost always the beans. French press is one of the most forgiving brew methods, but it rewards good coffee more than almost any other. The right beans make the difference between a cup you rush through and one you actually sit with.

Here's what to look for β€” and a few of our favorites that work exceptionally well in a French press.

Why French Press Demands Better Beans

French press is an immersion brew. The coffee grounds sit in hot water for 4 minutes, extracting everything β€” oils, body, flavor compounds. There's no paper filter to catch anything. That means the quality and character of your beans come through completely, good or bad.

Stale coffee tastes flat in any brew method. In a French press, it tastes hollow. Fresh-roasted beans, on the other hand, produce a cup with real body, natural sweetness, and depth that lingers.

What Roast Level Works Best for French Press?

Medium to dark roasts tend to shine in a French press. The immersion process brings out richness and body, and darker roasts lean into that naturally. That said, a well-developed medium roast β€” especially from a single origin with natural sweetness β€” can be exceptional.

Light roasts can work, but they require more precision. If you're newer to French press, start with medium. Browse our French Press collection for curated picks.

French Press Brewing Tips

Grind coarse. French press needs a coarse grind β€” roughly the texture of raw sugar. Too fine and you'll get over-extraction and bitterness. Too coarse and the cup will taste weak.

Water temperature matters. Aim for 195–205Β°F. If you don't have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let it sit for 30 seconds.

Steep for 4 minutes. Not 3, not 6. Four minutes is the sweet spot for most medium and dark roasts.

Press slowly. A slow, steady press keeps the grounds settled and gives you a cleaner cup.

Pour immediately. Don't let the coffee sit in the French press after brewing β€” it'll keep extracting and turn bitter. Pour it all out into a carafe or your cup right away.

The Ritual of It

There's something about French press that slows you down. It's not a push-button process. You measure, you wait, you press. It asks for a few minutes of your attention β€” and in return it gives you one of the best cups you can make at home.

That kind of intentionality is worth something. A few quiet minutes in the morning, hands around a warm cup, before the day asks anything of you. French press fits that rhythm naturally.
