Tanzania is East Africa's most underappreciated coffee origin. Grown on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Arusha highlands, it produces cups of remarkable clarity, brightness, and complexity that rival the best from Kenya and Ethiopia — bright acidity, wine-like fruit, black cherry depth, and a clean, lingering finish that rewards slow attention. This is the origin that earns its place in any serious lineup.

Why We Carry This

Our Tanzania comes from the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and the highlands of the Arusha region — elevations between 1,400 and 1,800 meters, rich volcanic soil, and cool temperatures that produce coffee with exceptional brightness and complexity. Tanzania's cooperative model has driven significant quality improvements, and the specialty lots coming out of Kilimanjaro and Arusha today are genuinely world-class — clean, bright, and complex in a way that rewards attention.

Flavor Profile

  • Bright, wine-like acidity — vibrant and complex, the defining characteristic
  • Black cherry and dark fruit — rich fruit character that adds depth and elegance
  • Citrus brightness — lemon and orange notes that add liveliness
  • Medium body — substantial but not heavy, with excellent clarity
  • Clean, long finish — fruit and acidity linger beautifully

The Process

Fully washed — the fruit is removed before drying, producing a clean, precise cup that highlights the bean's natural acidity and fruit character. Washed processing is standard in Tanzania and contributes to the clarity and brightness the origin is known for.

Ingredients

Single origin specialty Arabica coffee, Mount Kilimanjaro and Arusha highlands, Tanzania. Washed process. Medium-light roast. Roasted to order. Roasted fresh in Temecula, California — in most cases the same day it ships.

Yield: ~17–24 cups per 12oz bag. Larger sizes scale proportionally.

How to Brew

Pour Over (Recommended) — The ideal method. Clarity of pour over lets the bright acidity and fruit character come through with exceptional precision. 1:15 ratio, water at 200°F, medium-fine grind. Bloom 45 seconds. Total brew time 3–3.5 minutes. Drink it black.

Aeropress — Sweet, concentrated, and expressive. 1:12 ratio, steep 2 minutes, press slowly. Dark fruit and citrus notes with exceptional clarity.

Chemex — Thick filter produces exceptional clarity that highlights Tanzania's brightness. Medium-coarse grind, 1:16 ratio. Tea-like and refined.

Cold Brew — Bright acidity and fruit character translate beautifully cold-brewed. 1:8 ratio, steep 18–24 hours. Serve over ice.

Best For

  • Pour over enthusiasts who want a bright, complex East African cup
  • Kenya lovers ready to explore a similar but more refined origin
  • Black coffee drinkers who appreciate brightness and fruit complexity
  • Specialty coffee explorers building their palate and understanding of East African origins

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Tanzania compare to Kenya?
Both are bright East African washed coffees, but distinct. Kenya is bolder with blackcurrant and wine-like intensity. Tanzania is slightly more delicate with black cherry and citrus brightness. Both are exceptional — Tanzania is the more refined of the two.

Is it good for cold brew?
Yes — bright acidity and fruit character translate beautifully to cold brew. Smooth and complex over ice. 1:8 ratio, steep 18–24 hours.

Should I drink it black?
Yes — we strongly recommend it. Milk masks the fruit and acidity that make Tanzania distinctive. This is a black coffee drinker's origin at its finest.

What roast level is this?
Medium-light. Roasted lighter to preserve the delicate fruit and acidity that make it exceptional. A darker roast would replace those notes with roast character — and that would be a loss.
