Kenyan coffee is among the most celebrated in the specialty coffee world — and our Kenya is a perfect example of why. Bold, bright, and complex in a way that surprises people who expect coffee to taste like coffee. If you've never experienced a well-sourced Kenyan coffee, this is the cup that will change your understanding of what coffee can be.

Why We Carry This

Our Kenya comes from the highlands of Othaya in Nyeri County — one of the most prestigious coffee-growing areas in Kenya. Nyeri sits on the slopes of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range at elevations between 1,500 and 1,800 meters. Rich volcanic soil, cool temperatures, and a dual rainy season create ideal conditions for slow cherry development and exceptional flavor complexity. Kenya's competitive auction system incentivizes quality at the farm level — and our Kenya is sourced with full traceability back to the washing station.

Flavor Profile

  • Orange and lemon citrus — bright, vibrant, and immediately energizing
  • Delicate floral notes — subtle complexity that adds elegance to the cup
  • Effervescent acidity — lively and complex, not sharp or harsh
  • Medium-light body — crisp and clean with excellent clarity
  • Long, clean finish — citrus and floral notes linger beautifully

The Process

Fully washed — the fruit is removed before drying, producing a clean, precise cup that highlights the bean's natural acidity and fruit character. Kenyan washed processing is done with exceptional precision, contributing to the clarity and complexity the origin is known for worldwide.

Ingredients

Single origin specialty Arabica coffee, Othaya, Nyeri County, Kenya. Washed process. Medium-light roast. Roasted to order. Roasted fresh in Temecula, California — in most cases the same day it ships.

Yield: ~17–24 cups per 12oz bag. Larger sizes scale proportionally.

How to Brew

Pour Over (Recommended) — The ideal method. Clarity of pour over lets the citrus brightness and floral notes come through with exceptional precision. 1:15 ratio, water at 200°F, medium-fine grind. Bloom 45 seconds. Total brew time 3–3.5 minutes. Drink it black — this is the method that shows you everything this coffee can do.

Aeropress — Sweet, concentrated, and expressive. 1:12 ratio, steep 2 minutes, press slowly. Citrus and floral notes with exceptional clarity.

Chemex — Thick filter produces exceptional clarity that highlights Kenya's brightness and complexity. Medium-coarse grind, 1:16 ratio. Total brew time 4–4.5 minutes.

Cold Brew — Citrus notes come through clearly and the effervescent acidity is refreshing over ice. 1:8 ratio, steep 18–24 hours.

Best For

  • Pour over enthusiasts who want a coffee that rewards the technique
  • Citrus lovers who want brightness and vibrancy in every cup
  • Morning coffee — bright acidity and citrus notes are genuinely energizing
  • Specialty coffee explorers building their palate and understanding of African origins

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Kenyan coffee so celebrated?
Kenya's auction system, high-altitude growing conditions, and the precision of its washed processing consistently produce some of the most complex and distinctive cups in the specialty coffee world. The quality is earned, not marketed.

Is Kenya good for people who don't like acidic coffee?
Kenya is a bright, acidic coffee — it's not the right choice for low-acid preferences. For low-acid alternatives, we recommend our Sumatra or Brazil Santos.

Should I add milk?
We recommend drinking it black. Milk masks the citrus and floral notes that make this coffee special. If you prefer milk in your coffee, our House Blend or Colombia are better fits.

How does Kenya compare to Ethiopia?
Both are East African coffees with bright, complex character, but distinct. Ethiopia Natural has intense fruit sweetness (blueberry, jasmine) from natural processing. Kenya is washed — cleaner, more citrus-forward, with effervescent acidity. Both are exceptional — different expressions of East African coffee at its finest.
