Some coffees are good. Bali Blue is unforgettable. Grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Agung in Bali's Kintamani highlands, this is a coffee with real character — smoky depth, full body, warm spice, and a long finish that keeps you coming back. Bold without being harsh. Complex without being difficult. This is Indonesian coffee at its finest.

Why We Carry This

Bali is one of Indonesia's smaller coffee-producing islands, but the Kintamani highlands punch well above their weight. The region holds a Geographical Indication certification — the coffee equivalent of a French wine appellation — recognizing the unique character that comes from this specific volcanic soil, high altitude, and the traditional Subak Abian cooperative farming system. We source Bali Blue because it delivers something no other origin can: volcanic intensity with a smooth, warm finish.

Flavor Profile

  • Smoky depth — volcanic character that's bold and unmistakable
  • Rich, full body — substantial and filling with real weight in the cup
  • Warm spice — subtle complexity that adds character without sharpness
  • Dark chocolate undertone — smooth and grounding
  • Very low acidity — easy on the stomach, smooth from first sip to last
  • Long, warm finish — the smoky depth lingers pleasantly

The Process

Bali Blue is wet-hulled — the same traditional processing method used in Sumatra. The parchment is removed while the bean is still wet, producing the characteristic heavy body, low acidity, and bold complexity that Indonesian coffees are known for. The result is a cup that's powerful without the harshness of a poorly processed dark roast.

Ingredients

Single origin specialty Arabica coffee, Kintamani highlands, Bali, Indonesia. Wet-hulled. Medium-dark roast. Roasted to order. Roasted fresh in Temecula, California — in most cases the same day it ships.

Yield: ~17–24 cups per 12oz bag. Larger sizes scale proportionally.

How to Brew

French Press (Recommended) — Full body and oils come through beautifully without a paper filter. Coarse grind, 1:15 ratio, steep 4 minutes, press slowly. Bold, smoky, and deeply satisfying.

Drip — Reliable and consistent. Paper filter preserves the smoky depth and chocolate notes. Medium grind, 1:15 ratio.

Espresso — Bold, full-bodied shot with volcanic intensity. Works straight or as the base for milk drinks.

Cold Brew — Low acidity and bold character make this exceptional cold-brewed. The smoky depth softens over ice into something smooth and powerful. 1:8 ratio, steep 18–24 hours.

Best For

  • Bold coffee drinkers who want volcanic intensity in every cup
  • Sumatra lovers ready to explore another Indonesian origin
  • Sensitive stomachs — very low acid, smooth and easy to drink
  • French press enthusiasts who want a coffee that showcases the method

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Bali Blue compare to Sumatra?
Both are Indonesian wet-hulled coffees with heavy body and low acidity. Sumatra is earthier with cedar and tobacco notes. Bali Blue is smokier and more volcanic with warm spice character. Both are exceptional — different expressions of the same tradition.

Is Bali Blue good for cold brew?
Yes — one of the best in our lineup for it. The low acidity and bold character translate beautifully over ice. The smokiness softens into something smooth and intense.

When is it at its best?
In the first 2–4 weeks after roasting. Every bag ships within 48 hours of roast, so you're always getting it fresh.

What roast level is this?
Medium-dark. Dark enough to develop the smoky depth and chocolate notes, light enough to preserve the volcanic complexity that makes Bali Blue distinctive.
